The past year has been exceptionally hard for Kenyan farmers. Their farms have been ravaged by floods and locusts, and, since March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to the farming economy. In June 2020, we started listening to 500 small-scale Kenyan farmers every month. We heard about their lived experience during the pandemic and how livelihoods were adversely affected by supply chain disruptions and government lockdowns.
This report is the culmination of our work over the last 12 months, and the voices of over 6,000 Kenyan farmers.

Delays and challenges in vaccinator payments have been identified as a common issue affecting polio campaign quality. We surveyed vaccinators who participated in the polio campaigns in Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, and Republic of the Congo, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the countries and the World Health Organization’s Digital Finance Team. The aim of these studies is to understand vaccinators’ experience with mobile money payments as well as how to ensure that payments are timely, complete, and convenient.
These are the first of several studies we will undertake on the same topic. In the coming months we will be sharing results from upcoming polio campaigns in Pakistan and Malawi.

In March 2020 as COVID-19 began to spread, we noticed something: nearly all the data about how COVID-19 was impacting people’s lives came from wealthy markets and customers. The 3.5 billion people who are either offline or don’t have access to a smartphone were not part of the conversation. In response, 60 Decibels mobilized to do what we do best: listen to customer voices at scale.
This report is the culmination of our work over the last 9 months, and the voices of over 50,000 people in 32 countries.

With racial disparities of COVID-19 already well-documented in the United States, we wanted to hear directly from underserved small business owners to understand how they are managing through the pandemic and what they need to survive and recover. We partnered with Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), which were essential in providing access to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). We heard from 1,073 small businesses that were largely turned away by traditional banks. These summary insights can help CDFIs, investors, and policymakers to better respond with support for the recovery of businesses and jobs.
