Elucid: Improving Health and Livelihoods for Small-Scale Farmers

Elucid partnered with 60dB to hear from 275 farmers directly and explore how they could innovate further to meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

About Elucid

Founded in 2022 by Dr. Julius Emmrich and Dr. Samuel Knauss, Elucid is transforming the way businesses and farming communities approach sustainability and healthcare. The platform enables companies to gather essential data for sustainability reporting while providing healthcare services to small-scale farmers. As regulations around human rights risk assessment grow, Elucid helps businesses meet compliance requirements while driving social impact.

Since its inception, Elucid has provided healthcare access to farming communities in Ghana, Madagascar, Ecuador, and Venezuela. By 2025, Elucid plans to expand its impact further, reaching new communities in Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda, and Colombia.

Elucid and 60dB: Measuring Healthcare’s Impact on Farming Communities

At Elucid, measuring social impact goes beyond simply delivering healthcare services—it’s about ensuring lasting improvements in the lives and livelihoods of farming communities. While Elucid conducts regular internal evaluations, partnering with 60 Decibels allowed them to gain an independent, data-driven perspective on their work. Listening directly to farmers helped Elucid validate their assumptions, identify areas for improvement, and explore how they could innovate further to meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

Key insights from the study

Healthcare access and productivity

One of the most significant findings from the study was the confirmation that healthcare access directly boosts farmers’ productivity. The data revealed that farmers receiving healthcare services were able to work more consistently, increasing both their income and economic stability. This reinforced Elucid’s core belief that access to healthcare is a key driver of resilience, not just a social benefit.

Financial relief and well-being

Farmers shared that access to affordable healthcare significantly reduced their financial burdens, particularly by protecting them from large out-of-pocket medical expenses. This insight supports Elucid’s hypothesis that comprehensive healthcare can alleviate both financial and mental stress, leading to better overall well-being.

Opportunities for improvement

While the study largely validated Elucid’s approach, it also revealed areas for enhancement. Notably, the data pointed to a need for expanded healthcare accessibility, particularly in remote regions. Elucid is now using these insights to refine their strategy and improve the reach of their services, ensuring no communities are left behind. For example, they are launching mobile clinics that bring health services directly to the communities and reduce the geographical barriers farmers often face.

How Elucid is using 60dB impact data

Transparency and team learning

Elucid demonstrated their commitment to transparency by sharing the full impact report publicly to give their audience full access to the insights uncovered. They also facilitated a ‘Joint Learning’ session across teams in multiple countries, using the study’s findings to foster cross-team reflections and align on key areas for operational improvement. For example, the feedback around the need to enhance healthcare accessibility in remote areas is now being integrated into their strategy as they prepare for the next project phase in Ghana later this year.

Expanding reach and innovating for greater impact

In response to the study’s findings, Elucid is expanding their healthcare services to include mobile clinics, and partnerships with community health agents to serve remote communities. The insights also highlighted an opportunity to innovate by integrating additional services, such as financial solutions, alongside healthcare to support farmers more holistically.

Strengthening the case for co-funding

The comprehensive data unlocked has proven invaluable for Elucid’s strategic growth. By clearly demonstrating the positive social and economic impact of their work, Elucid has been able to attract new partners and investors, bolstering their case for co-funding opportunities that will support future expansion.

This collaboration highlights the power of external evaluations in validating social impact. By providing an independent, data-driven perspective, 60 Decibels was able to offer Elucid actionable insights that strengthened their operations, improved healthcare access, and showcased the tangible benefits of their work to stakeholders. The partnership underscores the value of listening directly to the communities served, ensuring programs remain responsive and effective.
