The Pathways
-
Access & Inclusion
How successful are companies at reaching people who didn’t have energy access before, at serving lower-income households, and at sorting out problems when they come up? We use six indicators here: First Access, Income Inclusivity, No Longer Using Prior Sources, Net Promoter Score, No Challenges, and Challenges Resolved.
-
Everyday Wellbeing
How much does daily life actually change for customers? We use four indicators here: Quality of Life ‘very much improved’, weekly energy spending ‘very much decreased’, not over-indebted, and climate preparedness ‘much more prepared’.
-
Opportunity
Does the product open up a way to earn? We use two indicators here: productive use of the product, and income ‘very much increased’.
What’s changed since 2024
Our first energy awards, in 2024, ranked six categories – Solar Lantern, Solar Home System, Mini-Grid, Appliance, Clean Cooking, and a separate Consumer Protection Award. For 2026 we rank four sub-sectors:
- Power & Lighting now brings solar lanterns, solar home systems and mini-grids together.
- Clean Cooking and Off-Grid Appliances carry over.
- E-Mobility was a handful of projects in 2024. It’s now a category in its own right.
We’ve also retired the Consumer Protection Award. Consumer protection hasn’t dropped out of the picture: challenges reported, challenges resolved and Net Promoter Score all feed into a project’s Access & Inclusion score, so it now shapes every ranking rather than sitting in a category of its own.
The Index has grown too. In 2024 it averaged three areas (Impact, Customer Experience and Access) across eight indicators. In 2026 it averages three pathways (Access & Inclusion, Everyday Wellbeing and Opportunity) across twelve. Which means 2024 and 2026 scores aren’t directly comparable. Each edition ranks companies against their own peer group, in that year.
